Our story
In 2008, Rob and Geraldine Brouwer ran Big Country Kennels and bred German Shorthaired Pointers and Bernese Mountain Dogs. The dogs were fed kibble because, like many pet parents, they never questioned the ingredients or nutritional value of pet food. Then came Bijou, a Bernese Mountain Dog that, you could say, started it all.
Bijou came from a well-respected breeder in Quebec who insisted that the Brouwers feed her raw - it was all she knew.
They tried, unsuccessfully, for several days to get her to eat kibble but eventually resigned to paying a visit to a local butcher. Following the simple recipes supplied by the breeder Bijou was reunited with the food she loved.
It took more trips to the butcher shop, but soon all the dogs were eating raw, and the benefits became evident - they had more focused energy, shinier and softer coats, they didn't have a strong "dog" smell anymore, and there was a lot less poop. It didn’t take any further convincing for the Brouwers to start recommending a raw diet to all new puppy owners.
It really is history from that point on. Pre-made raw from Big Country became a hit and word spread.
