Itchy skin, ear infections and gastrointestinal upset are symptoms of a food allergy or intolerance, and switching to a raw diet can be the answer to treating the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.
Food trials, or elimination diets, are the single most effective way to determine food sensitivities. Most commercial pet food has multiple ingredients, so determining which protein is causing the allergic response can be very difficult. We can clearly identify the protein triggering the allergic response when we feed a single protein diet for a period of time. Big Country Raw offers a wide selection of meal that are single-protein, including more novel proteins such as rabbit, kangaroo, pork, and duck. For example, BCR Pure Duck contains ONLY duck protein, using duck muscle meat, duck bone, and duck organ meats in the correct ratios to create a balanced diet.
Feed a protein that your animal never ate before, or did well on (no allergy symptoms) for a couple weeks until all the itching or ear infections are gone. This can take from two to twelve weeks. Don’t feed any supplements or treats from another protein for that period of time. Once all the allergies are gone, start adding supplements and other protein, always one week at the time.
